Description
The Regional Planner is a professional role responsible for managing various projects that serve local governments across a ten-county region. This position reports to the Director of Planning and Development and involves conducting planning projects, providing technical assistance, and performing related tasks. The role requires initiative and judgment, and performance is evaluated through meetings, reports, and document reviews.
Work Responsibilities
• Data Collection and Analysis: Gather and analyze data for planning studies and reports.
• Documentation: Prepare written analyses and reports for planning studies.
• Support and Liaison: Provide support for studies and documents required by the Alabama Department of Transportation or other State and Federal Agencies
• Grant Management: Prepare, submit, and manage grant applications.
• Public Engagement: Attend public meetings to gather information or present findings.
• Additional Duties: Perform other tasks as assigned.
Classification: Exempt
Position Classification Pay Grade: 15 – $57,272
Reports To: Director of Planning
Supervisory Responsibility: None
Work Environment: Office Setting – Hybrid
Expected Hours of Work: Full-Time Position / 40 Hours / Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m – will require attendance to periodic meetings outside core work hours
Job Requirements
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Urban and Regional Planning: Extensive knowledge of planning principles and practices.
• Research Methods: Familiarity with research methods for planning studies.
• Professional Application: Ability to apply planning principles to projects.
• Public Administration: Some knowledge of municipal and county administration.
• Project Development: Understanding of project development and planning document preparation.
• Grant Management: Knowledge of grant programs and management.
• Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in MS Office and relevant software.
• Cartography and GIS: Basic knowledge of cartography and GIS.
• Communication: Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Interpersonal Skills: Ability to maintain effective relationships with colleagues and the public
• Ability to drive an automobile, possession of a valid driver’s license, and ability to meet the criteria for authorization to drive Commission vehicles, as established by the Commission’s motor vehicle insurance carrier.

Required Education and Experience:
Master’s degree from a program in urban and regional planning or
Master’s degree from a program in a closely related field and 1+ year related experience; or
Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in urban planning with a bachelor’s degree
Degrees must be from accredited University Planning Programs.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Master’s degree in urban and regional planning or closely related field
5+ years of professional planning experience
