Building a Better PUD: Ten Ways to Create Great Places through Planned Unit Development

June 24, 2014 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Too often communities struggle with achieving their development goals through Planned Unit Developments. As a result city planning officials question the value of planned unit zoning regulations. But, well designed planned unit development regulations and review processes can generate quality development that cannot be easily produced through conventional zoning.

This course will provide 10 key lessons on how to optimize local PUD regulations and review processes to foster high quality growth through planned development. The course format will feature interactive exercises and cases studies to help city staff, planning commission and council members perform their roles more effectively and gain confidence with the PUD approach and the positive results it can generate.

With over 17 years professional planning experience, Jason Fondren offers municipal, developer and nonprofit clients a unique understanding of the built environment. His exceptional work with KPS has been recognized many times by the Alabama Chapter of the American Planning Association. Jason is well known throughout Alabama for his many speaking engagements for government, civic and professional organizations, addressing topics like land use law, asset-based planning, form-based codes, community revitalization, and sustainability. Jason’s work ranges from guiding cities large and small—Athens, Birmingham, Gulf Shores, Headland, Homewood, Mountain Brook, Ozark, Scottsboro, and Trussville—through planning and regulatory efforts.
