Description

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to support the City’s urban development goals, playing a key role in shaping the future of the city by evaluating priority areas for redevelopment, crafting inspired conceptual design solutions, and guiding projects from early vision through implementation. The position works collaboratively with City departments, developers, business leaders, community groups, and residents to translate urban design objectives into meaningful, visible outcomes. It requires thoughtful application of professional standards, policies, ordinances, and regulations to address complex design challenges and advance high‑quality urban development. The work responsibilities include working with confidential project information before it becomes public, using specialized design and planning software to visualize proposed development, managing the administrative and documentation tasks that keep projects progressing, ensuring alignment with established policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements, and coordinating research, maintaining accurate project data, and documenting key decisions to support clear communication and successful project delivery. This classification provides the opportunity to make a tangible impact on the city’s evolving landscape and reports to the Senior Development Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Urban Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Planning, or a closely related field, and two (2) years of progressively responsible professional experience in urban design, including the creation and rendering of urban design plans and concepts.
 
NOTE:  Qualifying education, training, and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any other vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Community Development Department. Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and supplemental questionnaire.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application and supplemental questionnaire form completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were. If more than five qualified applications are received, a selection procedure will be administered to rank applicants on the register. Tied scores will not be broken. If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
