SUMMARY:16th Annual Planners' and Zoning Administrators' Conference - Planning is Much More Than Problem-Solving
DESCRIPTION:Summary\nMany of us have waited so long for new investment – and we are looking for ways to attract new development. In fact\, as we continue to emerge from uncertain economic times\, most of us have a stake in resuming construction in our cities and towns. In response\, the instructor asserts that planning should be a key component of the community building and development process\, and that planning is “much more than problem-solving.”  \nYou will take away from this course an overall approach to planning that will enable you to avoid problems rather than just “solve” them as you guide growth and development in your community. You will learn the reasons why\, whether the issue is visioning\, urban design\, sustainability\, or development management\, that planning must get well beyond just trying to deal with community problems. And\, as a bonus\, participants will appreciate how and why those who work in the public sector – and especially planning and zoning officials – should understand and concern themselves with the whole of the community through a continuing exercise in problem-avoidance. \nSpeaker\nDarrell C. Meyer\, FAICP has over 45 years of professional experience\, including 19 years as founding chair of the Graduate Program in Planning of the School of Architecture at Auburn University\, where he is Professor Emeritus. As Director of Planning Services at KPS Group in Birmingham for the past 18 years\, Darrell has been responsible for all planning/urban design projects\, directing and managing Planning and Landscape Architecture staff resources. His expertise includes city planning and urban design\, downtown revitalization and historic preservation\, and campus master planning. Darrell authored the Alabama Planning Handbook\, has organized and produced numerous community planning processes and plan documents. He received a Master of Regional Planning in 1971 from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Arts in 1968 from California State University\, Long Beach. \nCAPZO Credits\n0.6 credits are available for this event. \nRegistration / More Information\nTo register\, visit the Alabama Planning Institute’s website or call 1-800-825-5862\, ext. 4862.
