SUMMARY:The Economic Impact of Expanding Passenger Rail in the State of Alabama
DESCRIPTION:In 2019\, Jacksonville State University’s Center for Economic Development and Business Research was contracted by the Southern Rail Commission to conduct an economic impact study for the expansion of passenger rail in the state of Alabama for various economic corridors and rail connecting centers. Previous feasibility studies looking at potential passenger rail corridors between; Montgomery to Mobile\, Atlanta to Birmingham and Birmingham to Montgomery were used as the guide to identify areas to measure. Factors such as tourism\, employment\, construction\, operations\, spending and anticipated users were analyzed to derive a dollar output therefore an impact on the state.  As modes of transportation continue to be planned and the growing importance of alternatives need to be considered\, rail and its consortium of connections are a link to the future.  \n \nSPEAKER\nJennifer Green\nDirector Jacksonville State University Center for Economic Development and Business Research \nJennifer Green is the director of the Center for Economic Development and Business Research at Jacksonville State University as well as one of their alumni. Kvach\, Executive Director of the Singing River Trail\, and learn more about this project and its goals. \nPresenter: Before coming to the Singing River Trail\, Dr. Kvach spent ten years as Associate Professor of Southern History at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and the last two years as Vice President of Liberty Learning Foundation. DESCRIPTION:The 2018 Spring Workshop (South) will be held on April 30th\, 2018 at the beautiful Graham Creek Nature Preserve in Foley\, Alabama.  Registration includes a full day of speakers\, great food/drink amenities\, and a tour of the Nature Preserve.  This year’s speakers will include updates on Low Impact Development\, the NFIP\, FEMA mapping updates in coastal Alabama\, an update on the Weeks Bay Watershed Management Plan\, stream restorations and more.  This year’s program is anticipated to include 5 CEC’s for a great low price.  The Graham Creek Nature Preserve located in Foley\, Alabama can be found at 23030 Wolf Bay Drive.  (Foley\, AL 36535). SUMMARY:Warren H. Manning: America’s First Environmental Planner
DESCRIPTION:About the Speaker: \nRobin Karson is an author/editor of the book Warren H. Manning: Landscape Architect and Environmental Planner. She is founder and director of the Library of American Landscape History (LALH) in Amherst\, Massachusetts. LALH is a nonprofit publisher of books that advance the study and practice of American landscape architecture. Karson has written several books and scores of articles about American landscape history and has organized touring exhibitions and documentary films. Her written work has been recognized by many national awards. A graduate of the University of Michigan in museum studies\, she has been made an honorary member of the American Society of Landscape Architects. \nRobin Karson’s talk will make a persuasive case for Warren Manning’s historical and national importance. She will provide insights into Manning’s background and work and will speak to the broad strokes of both his 1919 City Plan of Birmingham and the design of Mountain Brook in the 1920s\, with lots of interesting visuals.
