SUMMARY:Smart Growth in Small Towns and Rural Areas
DESCRIPTION:Summary\nRural areas and small towns face many issues — such as declining downtowns\, incompatible development in historic areas\, and loss of natural areas and open space — that can be addressed effectively by smart growth and sustainable planning techniques. However\, smart growth and sustainability tools are often less adaptable to those types of communities. This program will look at several rural areas and small towns that have adapted those tools to create plans and codes that facilitate smart growth. It will also describe resources that are available to assist communities. \nCM Credits\n1.5 CM credits are available for this event. \nRegistration / More Information\nPlease let us know if you can attend this session so we can prepare an appropriate number of conference visuals and reference materials. Reply by email to kgoddard@shelbyal.com or by phone at 205.620.6612. \nAdditional resources when available can be found at http://www.planning.org/audioconference/smartgrowth/resourcematerials.htm

SUMMARY:Holiday Decorations\, Public Property\, and the Law
DESCRIPTION:Summary\nThe holiday season is coming soon and with it some tough decisions for local and state governments: Does the usual holiday display at city hall violate the U.S. Constitution? How should you evaluate the request from a new religious group to sponsor a public display? Do local regulations impact private holiday displays\, and could they run afoul of the constitution too? Our experts will help you navigate the complex court decisions on these questions and create a fair and constitutional municipal strategy for the annual holiday wars. \nPanelists\nJohn M.
